Mapping the subsurface for a cleaner future

Before a turbine turns or a carbon storage site comes online, engineers need to know exactly what lies beneath the seabed. That’s where seismic survey providers step in. Delivering geophysical data that supports offshore windfarm planning, geothermal resource mapping, and even CO₂ storage. “Carbon capture is basically the same principle as oil & gas extraction,” explains Luka Baranic, Asset Supervisor at PGS. “But instead of pumping something out of a reservoir, you’re pumping something back in. For offshore carbon storage, we’re looking for a reservoir with a high-density, low-porosity, impermeable roof, often at similar depths as oil reservoirs.” In other words: the same expertise that once powered fossil exploration is now enabling the shift to renewables. Just in reverse.
